O-GlcNAcylation: a pro-survival response to acute stress in the cardiovascular and central nervous systems.

Abstract
O-GlcNAcylation is a unique monosaccharide modification that is ubiquitously present in numerous nucleoplasmic and mitochondrial proteins. The hexosamine biosynthesis pathway (HBP), which is a key branch of glycolysis, provides the unique sugar donor UDP-GlcNAc for the O-GlcNAc modification. Thus, HBP/O-GlcNAcylation can act as a nutrient sensor to perceive changes in nutrient levels and trigger O-GlcNAc modifications of functional proteins in cellular (patho-)physiology, thereby regulating diverse metabolic processes. An imbalance in O-GlcNAcylation has been shown to be a pathogenic contributor to dysfunction in metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cancer, and neurodegeneration. However, under acute stress conditions, protein O-GlcNAc modification exhibits rapid and transient upregulation, which is strongly correlated with stress tolerance and cell survival. In this context, we discuss the metabolic, pharmacological and genetic modulation of HBP/O-GlcNAc modification in the biological system, the beneficial role of O-GlcNAcylation in regulating stress tolerance for cardioprotection, and neuroprotection, which is a novel and rapidly growing field. Current evidence suggests that transient activation of the O-GlcNAc modification represents a potent pro-survival signalling pathway and may provide a promising strategy for stress-related disorder therapy.

Association of possible sarcopenia with all-cause mortality in patients with solid cancer: A nationwide multicenter cohort study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The concept of possible sarcopenia (PS) was recently introduced to enable timely intervention in settings without the technologies required to make a full diagnosis of sarcopenia. This study aimed to investigate the association between PS and all-cause mortality in patients with solid cancer. DESIGN Retrospective observational study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS 13,736 patients with 16 types of solid cancer who were ≥18 years old. MEASUREMENTS The presence of both a low calf circumference (men <34 cm or women <33 cm) and low handgrip strength (men <28 kg or women <18 kg) was considered to indicate PS. Harrell's C-index was used to assess prognostic value and the association of PS with mortality was estimated by calculating multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs). RESULTS The study enrolled 7207 men and 6529 women (median age = 57.8 years). During a median follow-up of 43 months, 3150 deaths occurred. PS showed higher Harrell's C-index (0.549, 95%CI = [0.541, 0.557]) than the low calf circumference (0.541, 95%CI = [0.531, 0.551], P = 0.037) or low handgrip strength (0.542, 95%CI = [0.532, 0.552], P = 0.026). PS was associated with increased mortality risk in both univariate (HR = 1.587, 95%CI = [1.476, 1.708]) and multivariable-adjusted models (HR = 1.190, 95%CI = [1.094, 1.293]). Sensitivity analyses showed that the association of PS with mortality was robust in different covariate subgroups, which also held after excluding those patients who died within the first 3 months (HR = 1.162, 95%CI = [1.060, 1.273]), 6 months (HR = 1.150, 95%CI = [1.039, 1.274]) and 12 months (HR = 1.139, 95%CI = [1.002, 1.296]) after enrollment. CONCLUSION PS could independently and robustly predict all-cause mortality in patients with solid cancer. These findings imply the importance of including PS assessment in routine cancer care to provide significant prognostic information to help mitigate sarcopenia-related premature deaths.

Association of maternal prenatal copper concentration with gestational duration and preterm birth: a multicountry meta-analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Copper (Cu), an essential trace mineral regulating multiple actions of inflammation and oxidative stress, has been implicated in risk for preterm birth (PTB). OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine the association of maternal Cu concentration during pregnancy with PTB risk and gestational duration in a large multicohort study including diverse populations. METHODS Maternal plasma or serum samples of 10,449 singleton live births were obtained from 18 geographically diverse study cohorts. Maternal Cu concentrations were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The associations of maternal Cu with PTB and gestational duration were analyzed using logistic and linear regressions for each cohort. The estimates were then combined using meta-analysis. Associations between maternal Cu and acute-phase reactants (APRs) and infection status were analyzed in 1239 samples from the Malawi cohort. RESULTS The maternal prenatal Cu concentration in our study samples followed normal distribution with mean of 1.92 μg/mL and standard deviation of 0.43 μg/mL, and Cu concentrations increased with gestational age up to 20 wk. The random-effect meta-analysis across 18 cohorts revealed that 1 μg/mL increase in maternal Cu concentration was associated with higher risk of PTB with odds ratio of 1.30 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08, 1.57) and shorter gestational duration of 1.64 d (95% CI: 0.56, 2.73). In the Malawi cohort, higher maternal Cu concentration, concentrations of multiple APRs, and infections (malaria and HIV) were correlated and associated with greater risk of PTB and shorter gestational duration. CONCLUSIONS Our study supports robust negative association between maternal Cu and gestational duration and positive association with risk for PTB. Cu concentration was strongly correlated with APRs and infection status suggesting its potential role in inflammation, a pathway implicated in the mechanisms of PTB. Therefore, maternal Cu could be used as potential marker of integrated inflammatory pathways during pregnancy and risk for PTB.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of diet and nutrient intake in adults with irritable bowel syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous individual and environmental factors including diet may play an important role in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is unclear to what degree dietary intake is affected in individuals with IBS. We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize dietary intake of adults with IBS and to compare dietary intake between adults with IBS and non-IBS controls. METHODS Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched through February 2023 for clinical trials and observational studies measuring usual diet in adults with IBS. Pooled weighted averages were estimated for total energy, macronutrient, and micronutrient data. Mean differences (MD) in nutrient intake were estimated for adults with IBS versus non-IBS controls using a random effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed by the inconsistency index (I2). KEY RESULTS Sixty-three full-text articles were included in the review of which 29 studies included both IBS and control subjects. Nutrients not meeting the recommended intake level for any dietary reference values in the IBS population were fiber and vitamin D. Meta-regression by female proportion was positively correlated with total fat intake and negatively correlated with carbohydrate intake. Comparisons between participants with IBS and controls showed significantly lower fiber intake in participants with IBS with high heterogeneity (MD: -1.8; 95% CI: -3.0, -0.6; I2 = 85%). CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES This review suggests that fiber and vitamin D intake is suboptimal in IBS; however, overall dietary intake does not appear to be comprised. Causes and consequences of reduced fiber in IBS deserve further study. Results of this systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that fiber and vitamin D intake is suboptimal in IBS. However, overall intake of other macro- and micronutrients does not appear to be compromised. Causes and consequences of reduced fiber and Vitamin D intake in IBS deserve further study.

Recent advances in the degradation efficacy and mechanisms of mycotoxins in food by atmospheric cold plasma.

Abstract
Food contaminated by mycotoxins has become a worldwide public problem with political and economic implications. Although a variety of traditional methods have been used to eliminate mycotoxins from agri-foods, the results have been somewhat less than satisfactory. As an emerging non-thermal processing technology, atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) has great potential for food decontamination. Herein, this review mainly presents the degradation efficiency of ACP on mycotoxins in vitro and agri-foods as well as its possible degradation mechanisms. Meanwhile, ACP effects on food quality, factors affecting the degradation efficiency and the toxicity of degradation products are also discussed. According to the literatures, ACP could efficiently degrade many mycotoxins (e.g., aflatoxin, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, ochratoxin A, fumonisin, and T-2 toxin) both in vitro and various foods (e.g., hazelnut, peanut, maize, rice, wheat, barley, oat flour, and date palm fruit) with little effects on the nutritional and sensory properties of food. The degradation efficacy was dependent on many factors including ACP treatment parameter, working gas, mycotoxin property, and food substrate. The mycotoxin degradation by ACP was mainly attributed to the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in ACP, which can damage the chemical bonds of mycotoxins, consequently reducing the toxicity of mycotoxins.

Effects of time-restricted eating on intrahepatic fat and metabolic health among patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study's objective was to explore whether early time-restricted eating (eTRE) and late time-restricted eating (lTRE) have different impacts on intrahepatic fat and metabolic health among patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS This is an 8-week, randomized, parallel-arm, open-label trial. Forty eligible patients were randomly assigned to eTRE (eating between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.) or lTRE (eating between 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.). The primary outcome was the change of intrahepatic fat measured by magnetic resonance image-derived proton density fat fraction. Secondary outcomes included changes in weight, body composition, liver function, and cardiometabolic factors. RESULTS Forty participants who underwent randomization completed the trial (mean age: 38.25 years). The eTRE group had a -3.24% absolute reduction of intrahepatic fat (95% CI: -4.55% to -1.92%) and there was a -3.51% absolute reduction for the lTRE group (95% CI: -5.10% to -1.92%). Changes in intrahepatic fat were not statistically different between the two groups. Both the eTRE and lTRE groups had similar and significant reductions in weight, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, liver enzymes, and glucose regulatory indicators. CONCLUSIONS Among patients with NAFLD, both eTRE and lTRE induced significant reductions in intrahepatic fat and improvements in body composition, liver function, and metabolic health with similar magnitude. These findings suggest that eTRE and lTRE are comparable and feasible strategies for NAFLD management.

Abstract
Armeniacae semen amarum-seeds of Prunus armeniaca L. (Rosaceae) (ASA), also known as Kuxingren in Chinese, is a traditional Chinese herbal drug commonly used for lung disease and intestinal disorders. It has long been used to treat coughs and asthma, as well as to lubricate the colon and reduce constipation. ASA refers to the dried ripe seed of diverse species of Rosaceae and contains a variety of phytochemical components, including glycosides, organic acids, amino acids, flavonoids, terpenes, phytosterols, phenylpropanoids, and other components. Extensive data shows that ASA exhibits various pharmacological activities, such as anticancer activity, anti-oxidation, antimicrobial activity, anti-inflammation, protection of cardiovascular, neural, respiratory and digestive systems, antidiabetic effects, and protection of the liver and kidney, and other activities. In clinical practice, ASA can be used as a single drug or in combination with other traditional Chinese medicines, forming ASA-containing formulas, to treat various afflictions. However, it is important to consider the potential adverse reactions and pharmacokinetic properties of ASA during its clinical use. Overall, with various bioactive components, diversified pharmacological actions and potent efficacies, ASA is a promising drug that merits in-depth study on its functional mechanisms to facilitate its clinical application.

Abstract
Flavonoids are natural phytochemicals that have therapeutic effects and act in the prevention of several pathologies. These phytochemicals can be found in lemon, sweet orange, bitter orange, clementine. Hesperidin and hesperetin are citrus flavonoids from the flavanones subclass that have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor and antibacterial potential. Preclinical studies and clinical trials demonstrated therapeutical effects of hesperidin and its aglycone hesperetin in various diseases, such as bone diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases, respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, urinary tract diseases. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the biological activities of hesperidin and hesperetin, their therapeutic potential in various diseases and their associated molecular mechanisms. This article also discusses future considerations for the clinical applications of hesperidin and hesperetin.

Engineering functional homopolymeric amino acids: from biosynthesis to design.

Abstract
Homopolymeric amino acids (HPAs) are a class of microbial polymers that can be classified into two categories: anionic and cationic HPAs. Notable examples include γ-poly-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) and ε-poly-L-lysine (ε-PL) that have wide-ranging applications in medicine, food, and agriculture. The primary method of manufacture is through microbial synthesis. In recent decades significant efforts have been made to enhance the production of HPAs, specifically focusing on γ-PGA and ε-PL. We comprehensively review current advances in understanding the synthetic mechanisms as well as metabolic engineering and fermentation process techniques to improve the production of HPAs. In addition, we discuss the major challenges and solutions associated with desired structure regulation of HPAs and the development of novel structures.

Effect of Unfermented Soy Product Consumption on Blood Lipids in Postmenopausal Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical studies have reported the beneficial effects of unfermented soy product consumption on blood lipids in various populations. However, contradictory results have been reported regarding the influence of unfermented soy product consumption on blood lipids in postmenopausal women. OBJECTIVE The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of diets with unfermented soy products compared with diets without unfermented soy products on blood lipids in postmenopausal women. METHODS The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase electronic databases were searched for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to February 21, 2023. RCTs were included if they were published in English and investigated the effect of unfermented soy product consumption on blood lipids in postmenopausal women who had discontinued hormone replacement therapy at least 3 months before randomization. A random-effects model was used to calculate the overall effect size of the mean difference (MD) and 95% CI. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Tool for Randomized Trials, version 2. RESULTS Twenty-nine RCTs involving 2,457 participants were included. The results showed that, compared with the control group that did not consume unfermented soy products, consumption of unfermented soy products significantly reduced total cholesterol (TC) (MD, -9.46 mg/dL [to convert mg/dL cholesterol to mmol/L, multiply mg/dL by 0.0259; to convert mmol/L cholesterol to mg/dL, multiply by 38.7]; 95% CI -15.04 to -3.89 mg/dL; P = .001) and triglycerides (TGs) (MD, -10.86 mg/dL [to convert mg/dL TGs to mmol/L, multiply mg/dL by 0.0113; to convert mmol/L TGs to mg/dL, multiply mmol/L by 88.6]; 95% CI -19.70 to -2.02 mg/dL; P = .016), while significantly increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD, 2.32 mg/dL; 95% CI 0.87 to 3.76 mg/dL; P = .002) in postmenopausal women, but had no significant effect on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD, -4.55 mg/dL; 95% CI -10.90 to 1.80 mg/dL; P = .160). Results of soy preparation subgroup analysis showed that soy isolate protein significantly reduced TC and soy protein-containing isoflavones significantly reduced TC and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Furthermore, unfermented soy product consumption significantly reduced TC, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and TG levels in postmenopausal women with lipid disorders and TGs in healthy postmenopausal women. CONCLUSIONS The results showed that unfermented soy product consumption reduced TC and TG levels significantly, and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in postmenopausal women. The findings of this review contribute to the evidence-base for dietary management of blood lipids in postmenopausal women.
